About Kodiak Bear

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • Housetrained: Yes
Kodiak Bear is a magnificent sable-and-white neutered male smooth Collie that is 3 years old and has never met a stranger. He enjoys the company of men, women, children and other dogs. He was a stray in the mountains and landed in a shelter where he was badly injured and lost his left front leg. As his foster mom, I will not be the one to use the word "disabled" in front of him. He just came to me and in less than 24 hours he has won my heart completely. He is a big, strong dog that is well-made. And his heart is big, as well. He laid in the grass beside me this afternoon and put his head in my lap and told me not to cry for him. I promised him not to cry but to do my best to find the perfect home for him. Here we go. I have not personally rehabbed an amputee before so I will do some reading on what methods are best to strengthen his other front leg. We are doing some short walks and he seems to be moving the remaining front leg more to the center to help with balance. This morning, on a short jaunt to go potty, Kodi lifted his back leg especially high on the same side as the missing one and nearly toppled over. I couldn't help it. I laughed. And he looked at me with such good humor in his eyes! Kodi would want his forever home to be one where someone was home with him a great deal of the time. He is very companionable and loves to flop on the kitchen floor while you are cooking or on a dog bed in your study while you are pounding away on the computer. Short walks are good for now but some water therapy for you and your new best friend would be wonderful too. If I forgot to mention, Kodi is completely up to date on vaccines and micro-chipped with a Home Again chip. Even his registration will be included in his adoption package. He will be the first dog ever to be listed under our "special needs" category but as one of our volunteers reminded me, he will not be special needs forever. And his new family will have to make the same promise, not to cry for him. Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our policies and guidelines, and if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. A good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit will round out our screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
