Mandy is a lovely and energetic 3-year-old smooth Collie mix. She has come to us from a municipal shelter here in Colorado where she would have been euthanized because she has limited vision. Her eye condition is called Progressive Retinal Atrophy or PRA. Genetics play a vital role in this disease and so it is good that she has been spayed. She does have fairly good vision during daylight hours but with diminished vision at night. It may take many years for her to lose her vision completely and it occurs so gradually that many owners don't notice the changes.
Mandy has gone to see our favorite Veterinary Ophthalmologist, Dr. Steve Dugan, and he assures us that Mandy is pain-free and probably does not know what normal vision is and therefore, we should not pity her or worry too much about when her vision starts to decline. She is a well-adjusted 48# sweetheart of a dog (Andi, her foster mom says so!!) and enjoys the company of other dogs and especially sleeping on a big cushy dog bed or between mom and dad in the "king-sized dog bed." Mandy is spayed, up to date on vaccines, is heartworm negative and has great baseline blood work and is micro-chipped with a Home Again chip.
Mandy's favorite thing in the world is to be in close proximity to the humans that she considers to be her pack. She is a delightful cuddle bunny and wants nothing more in life than to have people to call her own, especially a soft-spoken woman with a lot of time to share. An introductory obedience class would help to give her the confidence that she lacks from being abandoned. And children would need to be over 12 and very much in tune with a dog with a disability, or as Mandy would describe her situation, "a dog with great potential."
Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our policies and guidelines, and if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. A good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit will round out our screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
