Maxine is a mature and quiet rough coated Collie that has fallen on hard times. She may have been abandoned by her humans, perhaps because of tough economic times or perhaps she became lost and her folks did not try very hard to find her. In any case, her weight is 43# and she was on the verge of death by starvation. She was picked up by the Denver Dumb Friends League animal control officers and just in the nick of time. Another week on the streets and she would have died, frightened and alone. DDFL is a well-funded municipal shelter that does its best to salvage older dogs by releasing them to breed specific rescues when possible. They asked if we would take this poor girl and unravel health issues and provide support for her rehabilitation. And of course we said yes. What this dog needed most is food. Good quality food and time to recover from the lack of proper care. Groceries, a bath, some loving hands to remind her of better days. Her foster family has had her in their care for almost a month and she is now well enough that we know she will survive and continue to thrive. A veterinary ophthalmologist examined what appeared to be a sunken eye and diagnosed it as the complete lack of a fat pad behind the eye orbit. We will continue to watch that condition but it will take another couple of months for her to recover that soft tissue. Her vision is completely normal. How wonderful is that? Maxine is probably between 8-10 years old. In some ways she seems younger. Her energy is increasing as she obviously feels much better. She is housebroken, can “sit”, “stay”, “lie down” and “shake.” She is an easy girl to have around and doesn’t ask for much but loves to be petted and gives kisses in return. She is quite happy to be clean and brushed, have soft dogbeds, two generous meals a day and plenty of love and attention. Ideally, she could be adopted by someone who is retired or who could take her to work with them and make up for the neglect in her recent life. Clearly, she must once have had a loving home where she was cared for but the circumstances that led to her living on the street will remain a mystery. We want her to be able to put that tough time behind her and move forward with joy. Please consider Maxine to be your next best friend. Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our Policies and Guidelines and, if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
