Adorable Adak needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping him get a new start?
5/8/18 Adak the Adorable has completed the hardest part of his heartworm treatment, the injections of poison. And, as predicted, his foster mom could not possibly part ways with him and his adoption will be complete in short order. What a lucky dog! 11/20/17 The radiologist who reviewed Adak's chest x-rays found no changes to his heart muscle from the disease. And no infiltrates into his lungs. That means that we have caught the disease early and hope to have a good result from the treatment. The treatment itself is pretty barbaric. It is a lot like chemo-therapy. The goal is to irradicate the disease without killing the patient. As I said, barbaric! For those of you who are interested in such things, the standard of care for heartworm disease is the American Heartworm Society. It gets very specific about how the disease is contracted, how it is diagnosed and the in and outs of treatment. ************************************************************************ Adorable Adak is a 13#, 7-year-old blue merle Sheltie. He is one of the four Shelties that came from a puppy mill in Arkansas. He is the only one in the bunch to be heartworm positive. We will take digital x-rays and send them to a radiologist to help determine what stage of the disease he is in. We need to know if his heart is enlarged and if there are infiltrates into his lungs. Adak will need a long term foster home that will take the very best care of him while we pay for the immiticide injections to irradicate the disease. It is highly possible that whoever fosters the little guy will not be able to give him up once he is healthy. That has happened almost 100% of the time in this kind of situation. Please give this some serious thought. I would be glad to discuss this further with anyone wanting to care for Adak. It is the season of miracles. But we believe in them all year round.
