About Autumn

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Sable
  • Housetrained: Yes
Autumn is the name of this one-year-old rough-coated female Collie with the sad eyes and the kind Collie heart. Her basic nature is loving and gentle as most Collies are, even with a first year filled with neglect. She is making up for lost time in all the ways that count.....housebreaking, leash work and obedience training. Autumn loves to be close to her person at all times, even if we would consider the task to be routine. She may be able to do laundry on her own soon because she pays very close attention. And no one sits faster for a treat. Autumn is spayed and micro-chipped, up to date on vaccines, is heartworm negative and has great blood work. She rides nicely in the car and enjoys accompanying her foster mom on errands. She thoroughly enjoys the company of other dogs. She has taught her Golden Retriever fur-sibling how to play tug nicely with toys and how to engage in a rousing game of chase. (We feel that she would miss the companionship of another dog so another active dog will be a requirement for adoption.) Her foster mom describes her as a "big silly." She knows how to toss a toy for herself and then runs to catch it! What a girl! Some of the quotes from Judy, her foster mom, are just too wonderful not to share. "Autumn lies down with her paws around the water bowl to really savor the water-drinking experience. And she will lie on her back with her legs in the air wiggling and making happy-dog noises." "Autumn enjoys a good cuddle. She will put her head in your lap and if you give her a kiss on her cheek, she will sweetly give you a little kiss right back." Judy paints a lovely picture, doesn't she? Autumn does have some areas of training that need a little work. She gets terribly excited when meeting new people and could bowl someone over. She would benefit immensely from obedience classes to expand her social/communication skills and give her confidence in new situations. (After all, she is an adolescent with few previous real-world experiences.) And cats. Cats get her much too excited. So, perhaps a cat-free existence is in her future? You may wonder how it is possible to know so much about a new dog that has just come into our program. Fabulous human beings, like Judy, put their loving arms around each incoming dog and vow to make a difference for that pooch. They brush and cuddle. They teach and train. And they give a chunk of their heart to each dog with a promise...to give each dog the skills to move forward and have a great life. After all, that is the reason we do what we do. Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our policies and guidelines, and if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. A good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit will round out our screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
