Once upon a time there were three little refugees from Kansas that needed some place to go. Their Fairy Godmother was a wonderful dog rescue woman named MiChielle who never takes “no” for an answer. (That is a very important quality for a dog rescue person!) MiChielle told us the general information about the puppies and asked if we would consider taking them. We said yes, and that is how most conversations start out around these parts.
MiChielle had the privilege of naming the three dogs so that we could start making arrangements for these unnamed pooches. Three tri-colored dogs . . . Hmmm . . . Coconut, Cocopuff and Cocobean! Oh, MiChielle, we will be laughing at you for many years to come! The mother is a purebred full-sized tri-color rough coated Collie and the father is the tiniest Aussie anyone has ever seen. What does this make the puppies? Adorable.
Abigail Lee is an 11-month old spayed female “pocket collie.” A pocket collie is our descriptive term for a little collie that would better suit a smaller home. Abby is a small girl and weighs 30#. She is heartworm negative and her baseline blood work is good. Her vaccines are all up to date and she has been microchipped with a Home Again. Her foster family has given us a first report and it is a good one. “This little darling seems to have been left pretty much on her own with her littermates for company. But she is eager to learn all the things a good dog should know. She loves attention from men, women and children, although toddlers would be too much for her. Snuggling in our bed is completely new to her but she loves it and would like to have that luxury in her forever home.”
“Abby gets along well with the other dogs in the family but does not seem to know how to play. A good-tempered companion dog would be able to teach her that it is okay to have fun. She immediately discovered the treat jar on my desk and will remind me that she has not been given one recently. She does still have some puppy behaviors that will need attention. A patch of dirt without a hole in it is a challenge to her and she feels she should be the one to dig the hole. And a couple of shoes have gone missing and were found outside. Abby did not admit to it but we are pretty sure she was the culprit.”
Raising a puppy is a full-time job. Spending lots of quality time with a young dog will show up in the adult dog she becomes. Reinforcing good behavior with treats and praise, providing premium quality dog food and many hours of using gentle hands on the dog will prove your worth to her. We will give preference to applicants who work from home or have a stay at home mom or dad. No young children please…no one under age 8 in the family. And let’s remember the adult companion dog to help with socialization and fun. Okay, all of you dog lovers out there! Let’s make some magic for Abigail Lee.
