Katie, a sable and white rough coated Collie, hails from Oklahoma and came to Colorado with other dogs that had few options in their home state. Once here in Collie-rado, Katie went to live with someone with a very busy life and multiple small children. That family passed Katie on to a woman who had never had a herding breed before and did not understand their basic nature. That woman looked for a better route for the lovely little female Collie to find an appropriate home and called to see if we would take her in and find the perfect match. After only a week, we have figured out a bit of who she is and where she would do well. Colorado Katie is a 2-year-old spayed female with lots of spunk and a passion for toys and other young dogs. She wakes up in the morning with a smile on her face and will play happily while her foster mom fixes breakfast for all the dogs in the house. She eats well and plops her head on a stuffed dog toy for a short snooze. Then a couple of hours of rough and tumble play with her pals, running in and out of the doggie door, followed by a cool drink and a short nap again. More play until the 8-year-old child comes home from school, snuggling with the kiddo. Watching the family eat dinner followed by doggies eating their dinner. Computer time with mom until “last call for potty.” A comfy dog bed where Katie sleeps through the night and dreams of tomorrow when she will do it all again. Not a bad life for the little darling!? The ideal home for Miss Kate would be one in which she will have a balance of fun with another fairly high energy doggie pal and tutelage by humans who will teach her about boundaries and keep her intellectually stimulated. She likes children, so let’s see if we can’t find her a couple of really nice kids to live with. Her family will need to commit to at least a Level-1 obedience class to help with Kate’s skills and to increase the bond with her humans. We always require a fenced yard (although we would never want a dog to spend long hours in one) and especially so with a young and active dog with energy to spare. If you don’t meet these basic requirements, please don’t bother submitting an application. We hate to disappoint people but we will hold firm to what is best for each dog. Please begin the process for adoption by going to our website at www.colliesheltierescue.org, reading our Policies and Guidelines and, if we sound like the right group for you, proceed to the online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well.
