Collie (long coat) : : Female : : Adult : : Medium
Angel is a 3-year-old spayed female, sable and white rough collie with a smile in her eyes. She came to us with her littermate, Dawson, from an owner relinquishment. So many dogs in this tough economy are leaving the only families they have ever known and being rehomed. The lucky ones are coming to the "no-kill" organizations like Pueblo Collie & Sheltie Rescue. People who don't care so much just drop them off at the closest shelter without much thought as to what may happen when the shelter gets overloaded. We scoop up as many collies and shelties as we can from those shelters. But, try as we might, we can't save them all.
Because Angel is the third Angel in as many months, we will now call her "Angel of October." She is a light boned little girl that should weigh about 45-50#. She has been free-fed a starchy, lower quality kibble and needs to drop 8# or so. After only 10 days on a premium quality low fat diet, she is slimmer and has more energy. She loves to mooch baby carrots and tiny pieces of Granny Smith apple when her foster mom is having a snack. Green beans, carrots and apples are wonderful to add in small amounts so that your "chunky monkey" does not feel so deprived when on a diet. Only this morning, Angel played a game of tag with a collie mix youngster and then flew in the door to watch a car race with her foster dad. Lots of stimulation is good for young dogs.
Sweet Angel is heartworm negative and has normal bloodwork. As to her vaccines, we have a rather unusual situation with this collie. The herding breeds, especially collies and shelties, are particularly sensitive to many drugs. (This is all related to the mutated gene called the MDR1. Please look on our website for information on why only Interceptor is safe for our collies and shelties.) We have sent out "titer tests" to ascertain whether she has a high enough level of antibody or immunity in her blood to avoid needing vaccines forever. We will have the results shortly and will discuss this at length with potential adopters. Please don't misunderstand. She is healthy and the whole titer thng is just a tiny bump in the road. But it would be best for her to live with folks who are well-educated about veterinary issues or who are willing to learn about them.
As always, we are looking for just the perfect match for this dog. She is affectionate and companionable. Kids make her happy but so do adults. Cats are an unknown issue but I can't imagine her being aggressive with anyone or anything. Angel does not wanto be stuck in a backyard to be an ornament. She wants a full life with a loving family around her. So if it sounds like you have been waiting your whole life for this dog, please let us know. Let's start with you reading the adoption information section on our website at www.pueblocolliesheltie.org and then proceeding to our online application. The information section should answer most of your questions on procedure, etc. Once we have your application, we will begin the process by having a phone conversation with you and then a reference from your vet and a home visit. We do have a process that we have used for many years and it works well for us. Please understand that it all about the dogs and what is on their best interests. Thanks for visiting with us. The dogs thank you, too.
Please begin the process for adoption by reading our Adoption Policies and, if we sound like the right group for you, fill out our online Adoption Application. From there, our receipt of your completed application will be confirmed by email. You then will receive a follow-up phone call if we feel you are a good potential applicant for the dog. Lots of good conversation with the foster family, a reference from your veterinarian, and a home visit round out the screening process. We take dog adoption very seriously. Please put a lot of thought into why you want to adopt a dog, and help us make a good match for your family. We appreciate your taking the time to visit with us. We will look forward to hearing from you as well. |
